Salary issues: Govt. officers’ TUs to meet ‘TU activist-minsters’

While the Government is being blamed by public sector trade unions for allegedly not delivering on the promises made during the elections, the government employees’ unions are planning to meet ministers who were actively involved in trade union activism, in search of solutions.

Speaking to The Daily Morning yesterday (21), the Sri Lanka Government Officers’ Trade Union Association (SLGOTUA) National Organiser, B.A.P. Basnayake said that this meeting will be held prior to launching trade union actions in response to the Government’s alleged 'undelivered' promises, such as salary hikes. He noted that a number of ministers in the current Government, who actively participated in trade union activities while in the Opposition, has a responsibility to fulfil the promises that they once fought for. “There are around three to four former trade union leaders who now hold ministerial portfolios in this Government. They fought with us to secure employees' rights. But, it seems that they have forgotten what they fought for once they came into power,” he added. He further stated that the meeting will be held in the hope of receiving a positive response from the Government. “At the very least, they should provide a reasonable explanation for not delivering on their promises, especially regarding salary issues,” he said. He added that the trade union collective will take action if these ministers do not show sensitivity towards the problem.

However, The Daily Morning learnt that the ministers in question have not yet been informed about this initiative.
