Former Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal, who earlier made a statement before the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) looking into the causes of economic bankruptcy in the country, is to be questioned on his tenure as the CBSL Governor by PSC members, today (6).
Speaking to The Daily Morning, the PSC's Chairman and Government Parliamentarian attorney Sagara Kariyawasam said that while they had summoned Cabraal and United National Party Government MP Wajira Abeywardana to testify before the PSC on 15 September, only the latter's testimony had been taken in full. "Cabraal only made a statement that he had prepared last time. Therefore, we have summoned him before the PSC again. There, he will be questioned on matters pertaining to the period during which he was CBSL Governor, which may have had an impact on the country's economic stability."
He further said that several other individuals, including politicians and public officials, would be summoned before the PSC in the coming days.
Sri Lanka has been facing the worst economic crisis in its recent history. The crisis was so serious that the repayment of loans taken from foreign countries was suspended. Against this backdrop, several parties including Opposition Parliamentary groups have been insisting on the need to bring those who are responsible for the economic crisis before law enforcement agencies through a transparent and impartial inquiry.
