No Lankans hurt in LA wildfires

12 Jan 2025 | – By Faizer Shaheid

There have been no reports thus far of Sri Lankans being affected by the Los Angeles wildfires in the US, Ministry of Foreign Affairs South Asia and SAARC and Public Diplomacy Director General Niluka Kadurugamuwa informed The Sunday Morning.

The Los Angeles wildfires, which ignited on Wednesday (8), have caused widespread devastation, claiming 11 lives so far and forcing thousands to evacuate their homes.

The fires, fuelled by dry conditions and intense Santa Ana winds, rapidly spread across Altadena and neighbouring areas, consuming over 25,000 acres of land and destroying hundreds of homes and structures.

The blaze is believed to have started due to a combination of extreme weather conditions and a suspected electrical fault.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause, with officials warning that such fires are becoming more frequent due to prolonged droughts and climate change.

Thousands of residents remain displaced, seeking refuge in temporary shelters set up across the region.

California authorities have deployed over 7,500 firefighters, supported by aerial tankers and helicopters, to battle the flames.

Despite their efforts, containment remains challenging due to the strong winds and dry vegetation.

California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency on Thursday (9), requesting federal assistance to strengthen firefighting and recovery operations.

Relief efforts, including the distribution of food, water, and medical supplies, are underway at evacuation centres.
