The Police stated that while red notices have already been issued for the arrest of suspected organised crime mastermind  Mohamed Najim Mohamed Imran alias Kanjipani Imran, the emphasis is on the cooperation of the country where he is currently residing in as such is crucial to facilitate his extradition.

The recent shooting in Athurugiriya, which resulted in the deaths of two individuals, including businessman Surendra Wasantha Perera, also known as Club Wasantha, is suspected to have been carried out under the direction of Kanjipani Imran, bringing discussions about him back into the spotlight.

When queried by The Daily Morning as to whether the Police would take action to extradite Kanjipani Imran, Police Media Spokesperson Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Nihal Thalduwa said that the Police has already sought the assistance of the International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol) for his arrest. "The red notices have already been issued to arrest him. The support of the country where he is residing at present is important to extradite him,"

Kanjipani Imran fled Sri Lanka for Dubai in the United Arab Emirates using a fake passport on 28 March 2015. He lived in Dubai until his arrest on 5 February 2019, along with the deceased organised crime suspect Makandure Madush and several others at a party in a Dubai hotel. Deported to Sri Lanka, he was arrested in Katunayake while attempting to flee to The Maldives. On 23 August 2019, the Colombo High Court sentenced Kanjipani Imran to six years of rigourous imprisonment for drug possession and trafficking, following a guilty plea. He received three years for each charge. In 2022, he was released on bail in a case involving death threats against a Police officer, after which he fled to India, and from there to France, where he is alleged to have secured political asylum.
