SJB to consider Fonseka as a ‘defector’?

02 Jul 2024 | BY Buddhika Samaraweera

The main Parliamentary Opposition, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) stated that the most appropriate response to SJB Chairperson and Parliamentarian, Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka, who criticises the Party (SJB) and its leadership while praising President and United National Party Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, is to regard him as a Party defector.

Fonseka's public criticisms of SJB and Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, and his engagement with President Wickremesinghe, have created significant discussions in the recent past.

When queried by The Daily Morning about whether the SJB would initiate any disciplinary action against Fonseka, SJB General Secretary and MP Ranjith Madduma Bandara responded that the most appropriate course of action is to regard him as a Party defector. "There is no need for any action. He has almost left the Party and aligned himself with the President. If he criticises the Party and its Leader while holding events with the President, how can he still be considered a SJB member?" He also mentioned that it is absurd for Fonseka to engage with President Wickremesinghe while simultaneously pursuing legal action to secure his SJB Chairmanship and membership. "On the one hand, he is filing cases to protect his Party membership and Chairmanship when we are about to initiate action against him. On the other hand, he is going around criticising the Party and its Leader. His actions are ridiculous," he said.

Recently, while making a statement in the Parliament, Fonseka criticised Premadasa and Chief Opposition Whip SJB MP Lakshman Kiriella, accusing them of not allowing him time to speak in the Parliament. Subsequently, he was seen engaging with the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna backed President, Wickremesinghe. Fonseka even invited Wickremesinghe to be the chief guest at the launch of his book, ‘The Army Commander's Promise to the Nation – I will not leave this war to the next Army Commander.’
