World Champ and Commonwealth Champ loses to Dhanushka

Dhanushka Sandaruwan of Sri Lanka managed to show a remarkable performance winning the third place in the long jump event defeating Commonwealth Games 2022 Gold Medalist, and the 2019 world champion at the Miramar Invitational Athletics Championship 2023 held in Florida, USA. 

Seven players including Dhanushka and two other Japanese jumpers competed in the men's long jump event. 

The start list also included Jamaica's 2019 world long jump champion Tajay Gayle and 2022 Commonwealth Games long jump champion LaQuan Nairn of the Bahamas. Dhanushka had the lowest personal best among all the athletes who competed. But at the end of the competition, Dhanushka finished 3rd in the event with a performance of 7.92 metres. The first place in the event was won by Will Williams of the United States who recorded a performance of 8.25 m.

He is currently ranked 10th in the long jump world rankings. The second place went to Natsuki Yamakawa of Japan who performed 8 m. Gayle and Nairn finished 5th and 6th with 7.76 m and 7.74 m respectively.

Dhanushka, who spoke to The Daily Morning Sports after the win, said: “I arrived in Florida at 4.30 a.m. last morning. Then the event was at around 1 pm. I don't have a coach yet. But I am happy that I got to win this kind of feat for Sri Lanka. I hope to give the best to the country in the future.”

Dhanushka's jump will enter the record books as the fourth best jump in Asia so far this season. ‍

Meanwhile, the 100 m men's event that caught everyone's attention in the tournament was won by Jamaica's Oblique Seville, who recorded a time of 9.91 seconds, and the victory in the women's 100 m event went to US's Sha-cari Richardson, who showed an excellent time of 10.57 seconds. American Christian Coleman won the men's 200 m event and America's Abby Steiner won the women's 200 m event.
