The Lanka Salt Limited in Hambantota has increased salt prices due to the rising cost of imports.
Accordingly, a 400g packet of salt powder now costs Rs. 120, up by Rs. 20, while a 1kg packet of crystal salt has risen by Rs. 60 to Rs. 180.
Sri Lanka’s salt production declined due to adverse weather, prompting the Government to approve a temporary import of 12,000 metric tonnes from India.
Local production at Hambantota Salt Works is set to resume by March, with price reductions expected thereafter.
