President Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday symbolically awarded 442 out of the allotted 5,000 land deeds to the people of Mannar district under the ‘Urumaya’ national programme, the President’ Media Division (PMD) said.
The programme was held at the Mannar Municipal Council Auditorium (16). He also met with the Bishop of Mannar during the visit.
The ‘Urumaya’ national programme is expected to grant 2 million freehold land deeds to people across the island.
Opposition politicians and critics have called the ‘Urumaya’ programme as a political stunt by the President, targeting the upcoming Presidential elections, a charge that the President has denied.
