- Opex Holdings MD was holidaying with Brazilian wife, daughter, and friend
- Trio boarded flight to Qatar without businessman
Opex Holdings Managing Director (MD) and billionaire businessman 45-year-old Onesh Subasinghe has been found dead in a serviced apartment in Jakarta, Indonesia, The Daily Morning learned yesterday (5).
Subasinghe had been on a leisure trip in Jakarta along with his Brazilian wife, his 4-year-old daughter, and another unidentified Brazilian female, whom the family had met in Colombo prior to their departure to Jakarta.
Subasinghe was last in contact with his family in Colombo last Tuesday (31 January) and due to the lack of contact thereafter, the family in Sri Lanka had contacted the apartment management requesting that they check on him.
As the apartment management was unable to reach Subasinghe despite several attempts, the management had then entered the apartment to find one of the room doors locked. It was then that the management had proceeded to break open the room door and the body of the deceased was found.
CCTV footage from the apartment complex shows Subasinghe’s wife, daughter, and the unidentified female leaving the apartment last Tuesday after hanging a “Do Not Disturb” sign on the door.
Family members who visited Jakarta after the incident have found that the trio had left the country on a Doha-bound flight last Tuesday, and their whereabouts are currently unknown.
Jakarta Police is conducting investigations and it is suspected that a murder had been committed.
The Foreign Ministry and Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to the Republic of Indonesia, Admiral and Prof. Jayanath Colombage are also looking into the matter and making the necessary arrangements to repatriate the remains.
OPEX Holdings website stated that Subasinghe held a Bachelor’s degree in Science from Cornell University, USA and that his knowledge of investment, academics and experience brought meaningful gains to the company. He was also known to take on business challenges which had proved successful, it added.
OPEX is the first company in Sri Lanka to manufacture speciality liquid fertilisers for local and international markets, and has been the pioneer in the field of integrated nutrition management in Sri Lanka.
