  • NPC approves same over Easter probe

Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (SDIG) and former State Intelligence Service (SIS) Chief Nilantha Jayawardena has been sent on compulsory leave with immediate effect.

This is, until such time that the disciplinary investigation against him pertaining to the Easter Sunday terror attacks is concluded, the National Police Commission (NPC) said.

The NPC had observed that given Jayawardena’s role as the incumbent SDIG in charge of Administration of the Police Department, there might be a risk of him influencing the witnesses who are to give evidence for this disciplinary inquiry and that in order to protect the integrity of the formal disciplinary proceedings, and in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Code of Establishments, it had therefore been decided that Jayawardena should not engage in his official duties until the conclusion of the disciplinary inquiry.
