The Catholic Church of Sri Lanka urged the Government to investigate the alleged connections between social media activist Namal Kumara and the Easter Sunday bombings of 2019, claiming that Kumara’s accusations against the then Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in charge of the Terrorism Investigation Department (TID), Nalaka de Silva, contributed to the attacks.

Addressing the media yesterday (29), the Colombo Archdiocese Communication Director, Rev. Father Jude Krishantha, alleged that Kumara is being influenced by a political force seeking to discredit the Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith. These comments were made in response to allegations publicised by Kumara, including a telephone recording of former Parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake on the Archbishop.

Fr. Krishantha further claimed that Kumara's allegations in 2018 regarding an alleged assassination attempt on then President Maithripala Sirisena and former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa (later President) led to the arrest of DIG de Silva. He suggested that this arrest was a pivotal event that ultimately enabled the Easter Sunday attacks. "DIG de Silva was trying to track and arrest Saharan (the reported leader of the group of suicide bombers). That is why a conspiracy was staged to imprison DIG de Silva. With his imprisonment, the attacks were carried out. We have a suspicion that de Silva was trapped to facilitate these attacks. Kumara is the mastermind behind this plot," he alleged.

He also emphasised that the current Government, which holds an extraordinary mandate, has a responsibility to act against individuals who incite social unrest. He urged the President and Government to probe Kumara’s actions preceding the Easter Sunday attacks to determine whether they were connected to the tragedy.

Father Krishantha also stated that the Catholic Church has filed a complaint with the Inspector General of Police, requesting an investigation into the false allegations made by Kumara against the Archbishop. He called for necessary action against what he described as contempt towards such a respected religious leader. Fr. Krishantha also stressed that the Police should identify and investigate those who are using Kumara for their political agendas.
