  • 43% of a sample of 1,000 cite mental/psychological distress, 69% of them note discomfort in public spaces
  • Alcohol industry linking alcohol consumption to women’s rights

A survey conducted by the Alcohol and Drug Information Centre (ADIC) has revealed that 54% of women struggle with the alcohol consumption of others, while many are victimised by industry tactics.

The ADIC has conducted a survey to investigate the impact of alcohol consumption on women, focusing on the strategies employed by alcohol companies to target and normalise alcohol use among women. The survey, conducted across the 25 districts, involved 1,000 women aged 15 and above.

Speaking to The Daily Morning, ADIC Executive Director Sampath de Saram said that the survey revealed alarming statistics regarding the negative effects of alcohol consumption by others on women’s lives. He said that a significant 54% of women reported facing challenges due to the alcohol use of others, with 43% citing mental and psychological distress. Additionally, 69% of women experienced discomfort in public spaces because of alcohol-related issues.

The survey also shed light on the deceptive strategies used by alcohol companies to attract women. While 37% of women were unaware of the tactics that link alcohol consumption to women’s rights, 64% acknowledged that alcohol companies violate women’s rights by using women in their advertising campaigns.

He said that despite the National Authority on Tobacco and Alcohol (NATA) Act prohibiting alcohol and tobacco advertisements targeting all sections of society, including women and youth, such promotions continue in various forms. The ADIC also called for strengthened amendments to the NATA Act to prevent and combat these practices.

The survey also highlighted the importance of empowering women to respond to harassment under the guise of alcohol consumption. In light of these findings, the ADIC emphasised the need for a national action plan to counter the alcohol industry’s misleading narratives and to create awareness among children about the true effects of alcohol from an early age.
