In conversation with Shabél Paris Founder Shriwanthi Ruwanthika Amarasinghe

23 Feb 2025 | By Nuskiya Nasar

Born and raised in Galle, Shriwanthi Ruwanthika Amarasinghe’s journey has been anything but conventional. A computer engineer, tech startup co-founder, self-taught fashion designer, and certified yoga teacher, she has effortlessly woven together disciplines that seem worlds apart.

Beyond her diverse pursuits, Shri is an advocate for fearless exploration. Her journey is a testament to embracing the unconventional, blending disciplines with intention, and following passions that truly ignite the soul.

What inspired you to launch Shabél Paris and how did your Sri Lankan roots influence your journey?

I describe Shabél Paris pieces as conversation starters. They are more than just clothes or accessories – they spark connections, bridging cultures, people, and even language barriers.

When I first moved to Paris, I was told making connections would be tough without knowing the language. But I had my own way – I wore pieces that stood out. A kantha-stitched cardigan from Dhaka, a rattan laptop bag I designed in Sri Lanka, embroidered green boots from London, bold brass earrings from Nepal – each one invited a question, a compliment, and a conversation.

I never went to fashion school. Instead, my travels – often alone, sometimes lost – became my education. Through every challenge, I found kindness, made meaningful connections, and realised the power of what we wear to tell our stories.

In a world of mass production, I design for those who dare to stand out. Shabél Paris is about more than fashion – it is a narrative of self-expression, heritage, and individuality. My love for this was shaped by my late mother, who effortlessly blended Sri Lankan tradition with Western influences. She transformed heirlooms and hand-me-downs into striking looks, teaching me that fashion is not just fabric; it is who we are.

Shabél Paris carries that essence forward, celebrating cultural fusion and personal storytelling through pieces that invite dialogue, spark curiosity, and empower people to express themselves unapologetically.

Your pieces are described as sculptural and artistic. How do you blend fashion with the essence of fine art?

I see fashion as more than just clothing – it is a form of wearable art, a way to sculpt movement, texture, and expression into something tangible. My designs are described as sculptural and artistic because I approach fashion much like fine art, blending structure, form, and craftsmanship into every piece.

One way I do this is by creating unique and striking prints, treating fabric like a canvas where patterns narrate a story. Another is by designing pieces that hold exciting shapes and forms, pushing beyond conventional silhouettes.

I also collaborate with sculptors, brass makers, and weavers, merging their craftsmanship with my world of fashion. Sculpture and fashion share a fundamental language, as both involve creative cutting, modelling, draping, casting, shaping, and moulding to bring an idea to life.

By intertwining these disciplines, I aim to create fashion that is not just worn, but experienced – pieces that feel like moving sculptures, each carrying an artistic essence that resonates beyond trends.

What are some of the most compelling stories behind your exclusive prints?

My first collection, ‘Garden of Eden,’ is a visual narrative that takes the audience on a journey through the stages of this timeless story. From the innocence of the first bloom to the seduction of temptation and the ultimate rediscovery of paradise, each garment embodies a moment of beauty, growth, and transformation – a testament to the enduring allure of the Garden of Eden.

My second collection is an artistic tribute to Paris – the city of muses. When I first moved here, I lived in the 8th arrondissement, where I walked past Petit Palais, a breathtaking historical monument, every morning and evening.

I remember looking up in awe at its grand sculptures and intricate details, feeling inspired by the artistry surrounding me. In my ‘Essentials’ diffusion line, I bring that inspiration to life, featuring five iconic Parisian monuments which were hand-drawn and printed onto fabrics – a way to wear and carry the timeless beauty of this city wherever you go.

Can you walk us through the design and production process of a Shabél Paris piece?

Every design begins with a story; a visual and emotional journey that serves as the foundation for the collection. The inspiration is drawn from personal experiences, history, and cultural symbolism. This storytelling approach ensures that each piece carries a deeper meaning beyond aesthetics.

Once the concept is defined, the design process moves into the sketching phase. Here, the focus is on silhouettes and structures, textile and textures, and print design.

A defining aspect of Shabél Paris is its fusion of traditional craftsmanship with modern design. The brand works with sculptors, brass makers, weavers, and embroidery artists, bridging the world of fine art with fashion. Handwoven Sri Lankan bobbin lace, brass embellishments crafted by metal artisans, custom embroidery, and hand-painted prints are seamlessly integrated to create one-of-a-kind pieces that honour heritage while embracing contemporary aesthetics.

How has being based in Paris shaped your approach to fashion and creativity?

It has profoundly shaped my approach to fashion and creativity. Paris is not just a city; it is a living, breathing muse, where art, history, and innovation constantly intertwine.

Walking through its streets, past ornate monuments, grand architecture, and effortlessly stylish people, I have learnt that fashion here is more than just clothing; it is an attitude, a language, a way of life. The city’s deep appreciation for craftsmanship, detail, and individuality has influenced me to create with intention – to design pieces that are not just beautiful, but timeless, expressive, and full of meaning.

At the same time, being a Sri Lankan in Paris has given me a unique lens through which to blend my heritage with contemporary fashion. I see my work as a bridge between Sri Lankan artisanal traditions and French couture sensibilities, bringing together handwoven textiles, sculptural forms, and intricate craftsmanship in a way that feels fresh and modern.

In an industry increasingly shifting towards sustainability, how does Shabél Paris integrate ethical craftsmanship?

At Shabél Paris, sustainability is not just a trend; it is at the core of our philosophy. We believe in ethical craftsmanship, honouring both artisans and the environment, while creating pieces that stand the test of time.

One of the ways we integrate sustainability is by working with skilled artisans – from Sri Lankan bobbin lace weavers to brass makers and embroidery artists – ensuring that traditional techniques are preserved, celebrated, and fairly compensated.

By collaborating with these craftspeople, we not only create one-of-a-kind, handcrafted pieces but also support the continuation of heritage artistry in a rapidly industrialised world.

We also focus on responsible material sourcing, using handwoven fabrics, upcycled textiles, and deadstock from luxury fashion houses in Paris. This allows us to reduce waste while transforming high-quality materials into unique, sculptural designs.

Instead of following fast fashion cycles, our approach is about thoughtful design and slow production, creating timeless and statement pieces that are meant to be cherished, not discarded. Each Shabél Paris creation is designed with artistic expression, cultural fusion, and ethical craftsmanship at its heart, proving that fashion can be both beautiful and responsible.

How do you ensure your designs resonate with a global audience while staying true to your vision?

I achieve this by blending heritage with modernity, honouring Sri Lankan artisanal traditions like handwoven bobbin lace, intricate embroidery, and sculptural craftsmanship while infusing them with French couture-inspired silhouettes and contemporary aesthetics. This fusion creates pieces that feel both culturally rich and globally relevant.

Another key aspect is the focus on timeless design rather than fleeting trends. By creating sculptural, statement pieces with unique textures, bold prints, and intricate details, I ensure that Shabél Paris speaks to those who appreciate art, individuality, and craftsmanship, no matter where they are in the world.

Ultimately, my designs are conversation starters, whether in Paris, Sri Lanka, or anywhere else. They invite people to connect, to appreciate cultural fusion, and to wear something that tells a story beyond borders.

What emotions or experiences do you hope wearers of Shabél Paris undergo?

When someone wears Shabél Paris, I want them to feel a sense of empowerment, individuality, and connection – to themselves, to artistry, and to the rich heritage woven into each piece.

I hope they experience the confidence that comes from wearing something truly unique, something crafted with intention and meaning. Whether it is a sculptural silhouette, a handwoven lace detail, or an intricate print, every design is meant to make the wearer feel bold, expressive, and unapologetically themselves.

I also want them to feel a deep appreciation for craftsmanship and cultural fusion. Each piece carries a story – of Sri Lankan artisans, of Parisian elegance, of global inspirations coming together in harmony. Wearing Shabél Paris is not just about fashion; it’s about embracing a piece of art, history, and heritage.

What’s next for Shabél Paris?

The journey of Shabél Paris is just beginning and I am excited for what lies ahead.

Right now, I am working on a new collection for Colombo Fashion Week that continues my exploration of sculptural fashion, cultural fusion, and artisanal craftsmanship. This upcoming collection will push the boundaries even further, blending architectural silhouettes with intricate and experimental handwoven bobbin lace textures and fabric manipulation. Expect pieces that feel both bold and timeless, infused with the artistic essence that defines Shabél Paris.

Beyond collections, I am exploring exciting opportunities for international showcases and immersive experiences, allowing people to engage with Shabél Paris not just as a brand, but as a movement of storytelling through fashion. There is so much more to come and I cannot wait to share it with the world.
