The Climate Smart Irrigated Agriculture Project (CSIAP) is set to rehabilitate 205 additional tanks across Sri Lanka by December 2025, with an estimated investment of Rs. 4,200 million.
This initiative aims to support 12,000 farming families and irrigate 15,000 acres of farmland in hotspot regions, further strengthening climate-smart agricultural practices, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.
Implemented under the Ministry of Agriculture and funded by the World Bank, the CSIAP has already made significant progress by rehabilitating 470 tanks across 11 districts in the North Western, North Central, Northern, Eastern, Uva, and Southern Provinces.
The rehabilitated tanks include 116 in Kurunegala, 28 in Puttalam, 56 in Anuradhapura, 10 in Polonnaruwa, 34 in Kilinochchi, 47 in Mullaitivu, 29 in Trincomalee, 21 in Batticaloa, 19 in Ampara, 36 in Monaragala, and 74 in Hambantota.
These efforts have directly benefited 30,000 farming families, enabling the cultivation of 38,000 acres of agricultural land, and are expected to significantly contribute to the agro-economy, according to the ministry.
