Govt. slams health protests as ‘political’

19 Mar 2025 | BY Sahan Tennekoon

The Government stated that only a section of the health sector is engaging in protests for political benefits, while measures have been taken to increase the basic salary of health professionals

Speaking at the weekly Cabinet meeting yesterday (18), Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said that the Government has allocated Rs. 110 billion to increase the salaries of public servants. He also mentioned that Rs. 330 billion will be allocated from January 2027 onwards for salary increments. He further stated that a discussion was held between Finance Ministry officials and health unions on Monday (17).

“However, the representatives of the unions appeared to have already decided to continue the protests. We, at the Health Ministry, arranged a discussion with the Finance Ministry. But they (the unions) seemed to have already made up their minds to continue the strike. We have provided them with a good salary increment despite all these financial constraints," he claimed.

He also emphasised the need to consider the rights of taxpayers, who indirectly contribute to every salary increment that they receive. He added that the basic salary increase would offer several benefits to health workers, including loan concessions.

These remarks were made following the token strike launched by the Academy of Health Professionals yesterday in protest against the Government’s decision to cut allowances for paramedical professionals under its maiden Budget. The strike was carried out across all hospitals nationwide, with the support of multiple trade unions. Seven unions from the Joint Federation of Paramedic Professionals and 11 unions from the Joint Front of Paramedic Services extended their support. According to Academy of Health Professionals co-convenor Upul Rohana, the strike was called after unsuccessful discussions with Finance Ministry officials on Monday.
