The Election Commission (EC) has announced the maximum spending limit allowed for each candidate for campaigning during the upcoming Local Government (LG) Elections.

Accordingly, the spending ceiling allowed per candidate at the upcoming LG Polls is Rs. 74 per voter for the Mannar Ward, which is the lowest spending amount, and Rs. 160 per voter for the Lahugala Ward, which is the highest amount that a candidate can spend per voter across all wards in Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, the maximum expenditure limit of all other LG Institutions comes in between the aforementioned amounts.

Meanwhile, the EC has announced the dates allocated for the marking of postal votes in the 2025 LG Elections. Accordingly, postal voting for the LG Polls will be held on 22, 23 and 24 April at all District Secretariats and Election offices. Those unable to mark postal votes on the aforementioned dates can do so on 28 and 29 April, the EC said.

Elsewhere, the Elections for the Poonakary/Pooneryn, Mannar, and Dehiattakandiya LG Institutions will be held together with the 2025 LG Polls, the EC announced. Accordingly, the Elections for the abovementioned LG Bodies will be held on 6 May, the EC said yesterday (27). The acceptance of nominations for the Poonakary, Mannar, and Dehiattakandiya LG Institutions was held separately from the other LG Institutions across the island, and the process ended at 12 noon yesterday. The nomination process for these LG bodies had been delayed due to court proceedings; however, the petitions which had been filed over these LG bodies were later withdrawn by the petitioning parties.
