- Tells N-E Tamil politicos of a long-term solution to ethnic issues
The Government has promised the Northern and Eastern politicians regarding bringing a long-term solution for the historical ethnic issues through the proposed Truth and Reconciliation Bill which is to be presented to Parliament in January of next year (2024), as per President and National Policies Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, The Daily Morning learnt.
Speaking to The Daily Morning yesterday (21), Illankai Tamil Arasu Kadchi (ITAK) Batticaloa District Opposition Parliamentarian Govindan Karunakaran said that President Wickremesinghe had promised the Tamil politicians to table the Truth and Reconciliation Bill to Parliament next January in order to bring a permanent solution to the reconciliation process.
Following a meeting held with the President at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday, MP Karunakaran also said that the President had widely explained the development projects that are planned to be carried out in the Northern and Eastern Provinces and the future investments that are to be implemented with the support of foreign companies like Adani Group. He also said that matters related to the implementation of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution and rectifying land distribution issues were taken into consideration during the meeting.
The meeting was held at the Presidential Secretariat between President Wickremesinghe and the MPs representing the Tamil community from the North and the East. The discussions focused on various important matters, including the provision of land rights for the people in the Northern and Eastern Provinces, the implementation of laws related to resettlement and reconciliation, and the challenges faced by Sri Lankans in refugee camps in India. Additionally, numerous issues concerning district development in the Northern and Eastern Provinces were addressed.
