- Egg Producers claim cheaper eggs project off to sound start
Over 400,000 eggs were sold at Rs. 55 in 10 locations in Colombo yesterday (28) by the All-Ceylon Egg Producers’ Association with assistance from the Ministry of Agriculture, the Association told The Morning.
The Association also informed The Morning of its plans on expanding this system to other provinces, with the sale of eggs taking place at least once a week, and stated that eggs will be sold in the urban areas of Galle and Kandy tomorrow (30).
The project is aimed at selling eggs at a reasonable price for both the consumers and the producers.
Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera said while addressing the media yesterday (28), “We know that this is not the best option. But we cannot allow consumers to be exploited by the increase in the price of eggs in the market. Upon 1 million eggs being released to the market, those who increased the price of eggs will have to reduce the prices. As the Minister of Agriculture, it is my responsibility to protect the egg producer as well as the consumer. I try to fulfill that responsibility.”
Considering the increase in the price of eggs in the market to Rs. 65-70, the Minister had requested the All-Ceylon Egg Producers’ Association to sell eggs at a price of Rs. 55 and accordingly, the sale of eggs in several areas of Colombo and Gampaha commenced yesterday.
