The National Police Commission (NPC) has already taken steps to implement the transfers of all the seven Senior Deputy Inspectors General of Police (SDIGs) as decided by the Ministry of Public Security, including the transfers of two SDIGs Ajith Rohana and Priyantha Weerasooriya who appealed to the NPC not to implement the said decision, The Daily Morning learned.
Speaking to The Daily Morning yesterday (4), NPC Chairman and former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chandra Fernando said that no transfer has been halted at the moment and that all the seven SDIGs have been transferred as recommended by the Ministry. “We have already implemented the recommended transfers of the seven SDIGs as decided by the Ministry. We are informed by two SDIGs including Rohana to not to implement their transfers. Rohana requested not to transfer him from Galle in the Southern Province. But, he has also now been transferred to the Police Headquarters on a supernumerary basis. All these transfers were recommended by the Ministry because of the requirement of service. So, no one can reject it or object to it. We carried it out as there was no issue with those recommended transfers,” he said.
Last month, the Department of Police had taken a decision to transfer seven SDIGs due to service requirements. Accordingly, seven SDIGs including Lalith Pathinayake, Rohana, Sajeewa C. Medawatte, W. Kithsiri Jayalath, L.K.W.K. Silva, Weerasooriya and Ranmal Kodithuwakku were transferred with immediate effect, it said.
Following the Ministry’s decision to transfer them, Rohana and Weerasooriya had written to the NPC requesting not to implement the decision of the Ministry.
