The Government will investigate the claims made by the Channel 4 documentary following Pivithuru Hela Urumaya Leader Udaya Gammanpila’s calls to investigate the identity of an individual claiming to be a Government official who is a source in the said documentary which implicates certain local intelligence officials as being complicit in the Easter Sunday attacks.
“We will open a comprehensive investigation of the Easter Sunday attacks including the claims made by Channel 4,” Cabinet Spokesperson, Public Security Minister Vijitha Herath said at a press conference yesterday (29).
These comments follow a call by Gammanpila to investigate the identity of the person claiming to be an official and to take action against him for treason. Last week, Gammanpila claimed that two reports by the committees headed by retired Supreme Court Justice S.I. Imam and retired High Court Judge A.N.J. De Alwis on aspects pertaining to the intelligence services and community’s role in the context of the said bombings, had not been released to the public by the Government.
The Easter Sunday attacks took place in April 2019, after churches and hotels were targeted by the National Thowheeth Jamath killing approximately 290 people and injuring many others.
