No official polling card, don’t worry

  • PAFFREL notes that providing necessary ID would suffice

The People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) Executive Director Rohana Hettiarachchi assured that the absence of an official polling card for the upcoming Presidential Election – the distribution of which is currently in progress - would not hinder the voters from exercising their right to vote, if they are able to provide the necessary identification (ID) documents. “The Election Commission (EC), in collaboration with the Postal Department, is distributing official polling cards to registered voters. This serves as an invitation for voters to cast their ballots,” Hettiarachchi explained. “However, whether or not you receive this invitation will not prevent you from voting.”

He emphasised that the key requirements for voting are being registered on the electoral roll, knowing the assigned polling station, and presenting a valid form of identification as approved by the EC. “The official polling card includes important details like your polling station and voter number, making it easier to navigate the process. But, even if you don’t receive it, voters should not be concerned. It is not a major barrier to casting your vote,” Hettiarachchi added, urging voters to remain confident about their ability to participate in the Election.

Meanwhile, the official polling card distribution process, which began on 3 September, is expected to continue until 14 September. The 2024 Presidential Election is set to be held on 21 September.
