Electricity tariffs: New proposal awaits PUCSL nod

Electricity tariffs: New proposal awaits PUCSL nod

20 Oct 2024 | By Kenolee Perera

  • First revision scheduled for 1 Oct.

The State-run Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has stated that while a new tariff proposal has already been prepared by the board, it is waiting for the establishment of the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) to submit it.

A senior official attached to the CEB, who wished to remain anonymous, noted that the decision on whether the tariff would be increased or decreased would be made by the PUCSL, which had the authority to do so.

“We are waiting until the PUCSL is established,” the official stressed.

Nevertheless, the tariff was supposed to be revised on 1 October.

According to the official, the new tariffs will most probably come into effect in January next year.

“When we submit the proposal, the PUCSL, once it is established, will follow the necessary process and the new tariffs will most likely be implemented from January,” the official said.

Established as a quarterly act on 1 January this year, the electricity tariff is expected to be revised every three months. The last proposed reduction followed a major tariff cut announced in July by the PUCSL, which saw electricity prices for domestic consumers reduced by 25%.

That tariff adjustment was part of a broader 22.5% revision across all consumer categories.
