The Colombo High Court yesterday (24) stated that evidence will be called for the defence in the case against former Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Kulasiri Udugampola, who is accused of having committed an offence by raiding a safe house run by officers of the Directorate of Military Intelligence (DMI) in Athurugiriya in January 2002.
The case, which has been filed by the Attorney General (AG) against Udugampola, was taken up before Judge Adithya Patabendige to deliver the court’s decision regarding whether or not to release the accused from the case without calling for evidence for the defence. Delivering the decision, Judge Patabendige stated that the court had decided that it was necessary to call evidence for the defence, considering all the submissions that have been made to the court. Accordingly, he ordered that the case be taken up again on 21 February.
The AG has filed the case against ASP Udugampola, accusing him of having committed the offences of exposing confidential matters of the State and endangering national security and the country’s sovereignty by raiding a safe house run by DMI officers at the Millennium City housing complex in Athurugiriya on 2 January 2002, arresting the military intelligence officers and seizing their weapons.
