  • Bamba Brigade scored 169 points in overall tourney
  • Pathana suffer 3rd back-to-back finals defeat against SPC

St. Peter’s College, Colombo stamped their class in Sri Lanka’s Schools Rugby arena as they continued their league/knockout double championship winning momentum after being crowned as champions beating Isipathana College 17-05 in the grand final of the Zahira Centenary Rugby 7s on Sunday (3). The event was organised to celebrate 100 years of Rugby at Zahira College, Colombo, a pioneer in playing the oval ball game in the island nation as the fourth school to take up Rugby after Kingswood College, Trinity College, and Royal College. Top sixteen schoolboy rugby playing schools across the island took part in the tournament which had many events during the past few months leading up to the grand Centenary 7s celebrations.

The Peterites led 10-00 at half time to silence the massive Isipathana crowd present at the Colombo Racecourse in a jam-packed grandstand. Pathana lads with their ever -famous crowd support from all corners of the park tried to pull off a second half comeback, however the Peterites were too strong to overcome.

St Peters scored 169 against 10 points in the entire tournament – both tries scored by Isipathana in the six matches they played. They had a superb clean sheet record except their group stage 19-05 win against Isipathana in the overall tourney. The Bamba Brigade beat Kingswood, Isipathana, and Mahanama in their group games.

D.S. Senanayake College defeated a 6-man Wesley College outfit 14-7 after their key player Senura Silva was red-carded for a dangerous tackle. The ‘Donz’ secured the third place bronze championship.

Royal College got the better of St. Joseph’s College 24-17 in a closely contested affair to secure the Plate Championship. In an all Kandy affair but a one sided affair saw Trinity College clinch the Bowl Championship beating hometown traditional Kingswood College 22-05. Maliyadeva College took home the Shield Championship to Kurunegala beating Mahanama College 17-12.
