Former state minister Viyalendran arrested over bribery allegations

25 Mar 2025 | BY Lahiru Doloswala

Former State Minister Sathasivam Viyalendran has been arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC).

Viyalendran, a Tamil politician and ex-MP from Batticaloa, was taken into custody following a CIABOC operation, though specific details of the allegations remain undisclosed.

Following his arrest, Viyalendran was produced before the Aluthkade Magistrate’s Court on today (25), where the Magistrate ordered his remand until 1 April.

Elected to Parliament in 2015 as a Tamil National Alliance (TNA) candidate, he later switched allegiance, aligning with the Rajapaksa-led United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) coalition.

CIABOC, empowered by the Anti-Corruption Act of 2023, has ramped up its activities in recent months, targeting high-profile figures across party lines.
