The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP)-led National People's Power (NPP) of the Parliamentary Opposition challenged Minister of Public Security Tiran Alles to reveal to the country the identity of the person who allegedly attempted to bribe him with a sum of Rs. 700 million, in order to prevent the arrest of organised crime suspect Nadun Chinthaka alias “Harak Kata”.
Speaking at a recent seminar attended by senior Police officers in the Southern Province, Alles claimed that a person had attempted to offer him a bribe of Rs. 700 million to prevent Chinthaka from being extradited to Sri Lanka.
Commenting on the Minister's claim, NPP Parliamentarian Vijitha Herath said that the people would be eager to know who the individual who attempted to bribe Alles was. "Who attempted to offer you (Alles) a bribe? You should reveal it to the country as the country would be eager to know about it."
Since Alles had also claimed that the relevant individual had been shot dead in the recent past, Herath alleged that there are reasonable doubts as to whether the individual in question was someone who was related to a particular state minister. "Two groups in Kudawella and Kosgoda were shooting each other over the past few months. During that period, a leading businessman in Galle was shot dead. We would like to know if it was he who attempted to offer you the bribe."
A team of Criminal Investigations Department (CID) officers left for Madagascar on 11 March to repatriate Chinthaka and his accomplice Salindu Malshika Gunaratne alias “Panadure Kudu Salindu” who were arrested while on a visit to the island off the southeastern coast of Africa. They were brought to Sri Lanka on 15 March, and placed under the detention of the CID under the Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Act.
