Dr. Chamal Sanjeeva who was suspended by former Secretary to the Ministry of Health (MoH) Janaka Chandragupta during the tenure of former Health Minister Keheliya Rambukkella, has been reinstated today (08) on the recommendations of the Public Service Commission's Health Committee. He is set to assume responsibilities at the MoH.
Dr. Sanjeeva, who holds a specialist medical degree in hospital administration and management, was suspended from work in November 2022 based on statements made by the Hambantota District regarding the nutritional status of children, suggesting a potential nutritional crisis among the country's children.
Notably, Dr. Sanjeeva was the first to expose the questionable immunoglobulin and cancer drug fraud, currently undergoing trial in court.
During his suspension period, the MoH uncovered instances of corruption and fraud, while Dr. Sanjeeva continued to advocate for a national health policy.
Following recommendations from the current Secretary to MoH Palitha Mahipala, the health sub-committee of the Public Service Commission has advised his immediate reinstatement.
It's noteworthy that the formal disciplinary investigation conducted against him by the MoH is yet to reach a conclusion.
However, preliminary findings indicate that Dr. Sanjeeva did not make any questionable statements.
Speaking to The Morning, sources within the MoH indicated that he is to be temporarily appointed to the position of Director of Medical Supply, which is currently vacant within the MoH.
