  • Convenes SGM for 13 December

The National Olympic of Sri Lanka (NOCSL) has decided to convene a Special General Meeting (SGM) on 13 December at 5 p.m. with the intention of ending the ongoing tug of war between its President and Secretary General, The Sunday Morning Sports learns.

The NOCSL had reportedly decided to call for this SGM following a request made by 16 of its member associations and the players’ committee in order to review the festering animosity between its President Suresh Subramaniam and Secretary General Maxwell de Silva and to resolve matters.

It is also understood that a recent request made by the NOCSL Executive Committee for its Ethics Committee members to be present for a discussion to resolve the ongoing discord between the duo had been ignored.

The NOCSL Executive Committee had called for the meeting to discuss in detail the report compiled by the Ethics Committee recommending the suspension of its Secretary General.

The Ethics Committee’s report had been based on an investigative report filed by a three-member panel from the Sports Ministry, which had probed a litany of alleged malpractices engaged in by de Silva.

The NOCSL Ethics Committee is headed by President’s Counsel Dinal Phillips. However, certain factions in the NOCSL Executive Committee have outright dismissed the report filed by the Ethics Committee, insisting that those serving in the latter have arrived at erroneous conclusions.

Meanwhile, a case filed against de Silva requesting to restrain his work at the NOCSL was deferred until 5 December by Colombo District Court Judge Sandun Vithana on Thursday (21).

Thereafter, the lawyers on behalf of the respondents, including the NOCSL General Secretary, filed proxies.

The court thus instructed the respondents to file objections before the next hearing, while the case has been filed by two officials from the Cycling Federation of Sri Lanka and Football Sri Lanka (FSL), respectively, as private petitioners.
