Governance: ‘Performs duties without fear or favour’: Minister Abeysena

Prof. Krishantha Abeysena, Minister of Science and Technology called on public officials to carry out their duties independently, free from any political interference stating that the Government will protect public officials from external pressures.

The minister made these remarks addressing a meeting held with government officials attached to Wattala-Mabola Urban Council. He stated that, “You should perform your responsibilities without fear or favour. The Government will not interfere with your work, and we are committed to ensuring you can serve the public impartially and transparently.”

The minister highlighted the importance of delivering public services in compliance with the law. He also stated that the Government plans to strengthen collaboration between local authorities, such as urban councils, regional councils, and provincial councils, and the public. “We aim to connect these institutions with the people, making the service delivery process more effective and inclusive,” he added. 

The meeting included discussions on key areas managed by the Urban Council, such as Ayurvedic services, healthcare, transport, waste management, revenue generation, and environmental and noise pollution caused by industries. The minister stressed the need for transparency in these sectors and urged officials to work towards improving existing standards.

The minister also reiterated the Government’s commitment to supporting public officials in carrying out their duties effectively. “We are here to protect and empower you to serve the people better,” he said. Following the discussions, Prof. Abeysena joined the officials for a field visit to inspect several locations under the Urban Council’s administration.
