Sri Lanka's mango harvest surges

The Department of Agriculture stated that the mango harvest in Sri Lanka has indicated a record increase this year.

According to the department, the prolonged dry weather in 2023 and the subsequent rainy weather have caused the mango harvest to increase.

The department also stated that thousands of acres of mangoes are cultivated islandwide, especially the TEJC mango variety, which is cultivated for export, and the production may be hampered due to the decrease in the price.

According to the data from the Post-Harvest Technology Institute, the annual mango harvest of all varieties grown in Sri Lanka is about 250 million fruits.

The Department noted that the current data has confirmed that the 2023 to 2024 mango season has exceeded that amount.

Due to this the TEJC mangoes variety, which used to fetch between Rs. 800 to Rs. 1,000 per kilogram, has now dropped to between Rs. 400 to Rs. 500 per kilogram in the market, according to the Department of Agriculture.
