  • AG tipped to get a six-month extension

The Constitutional Council (CC) is set to discuss the recommended service extension for Attorney General President's Counsel (PC) Sanjay Rajaratnam tomorrow (4), it is learnt.

Late last week, it was reported that President Ranil Wickremesinghe has recommended a six-month service extension for Rajaratnam, who is due to retire soon.

When contacted by The Daily Morning, a CC member who spoke on terms of anonymity stated that the CC's next meeting is scheduled for tomorrow and that the recommendation will be on the agenda. "I have learned that a service extension has been recommended for the AG. Typically, when such a recommendation is referred to the CC, the members are informed. Although we have not yet been notified of this particular matter. However, the CC will discuss it during the meeting." the member said.

Media reports have indicated that a service extension has been recommended to the AG due to his involvement in investigations and legal affairs related to the Easter Sunday terror attacks of 21 April 2019. According to these reports, President Ranil Wickremesinghe has informed a group of parliamentarians who inquired about the matter that the Attorney General is playing a significant role, including collaborating with the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Sri Lanka (CBCSL), it is learnt.
