The Western Province singles chess tournament concluded recently with the participation of more than 2,500 players at the Homagama Central College premises.

J.A. Indrajith of Rathnavali Balika Vidyalaya, Gampaha secured the championship in the girls’ under-20 category, while T.S. Wickremesinghe of Musaeus College was placed second best. Pramudhi Mindhara of Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya finished third.

Ovin Gamage of Isipathana College won the championship in the boys’ under-20 category with Sanithu Morayes of St. Joseph’s College ending as runner-up. Ushan Kumara of Thissa Central College, Kalutara bagged the third place.

Out of 2,500 plus participants, 21 outstanding players across multiple age groups were qualified to participate at the All-Island Chess Championships to be held in September at Trincomalee. 

The event was organised by the Sri Lanka Schools’ Chess Association under the guidance of the Ministry of Education.
