Security alert in Arugam Bay amid threats against Israeli tourists

03 Nov 2024 | By Amaani Munaf

In recent developments, Sri Lankan authorities have responded to credible threats targeting Israeli nationals in the scenic coastal town of Arugam Bay. Known for its stunning beaches and popular surf spots, Arugam Bay draws numerous international tourists each year, with Israelis being a significant portion of the visitors.

The warning, prompted by alerts from the US Embassy and Israel’s National Security Council, advised Israeli travellers to avoid certain coastal areas in Sri Lanka, particularly Arugam Bay, which is frequented by Israeli tourists seeking leisure and adventure.

Heightened security measures

Following these warnings, Sri Lankan authorities quickly implemented a range of security measures to protect tourists and locals alike. Police and Special Task Force (STF) units were deployed to tourist-heavy areas, including Colombo, Weligama, and Ella, with increased visibility of patrols to provide reassurance to visitors.

In addition, roadblocks were set up at strategic points around Arugam Bay, and heightened surveillance was introduced around Chabad houses – Jewish community centres where Israeli tourists often gather. Some Israeli visitors, taking precautions, have already begun leaving Arugam Bay in response to the increased threat level and Government guidance.

This strong security response from Sri Lankan officials emphasises the country’s commitment to tourism safety, a priority given its reliance on tourism as a vital part of the economy. Arugam Bay, in particular, is a well-known destination for international surfers, and Sri Lanka’s Government recognises the importance of ensuring a safe environment for both visitors and locals, particularly during the current tourist season.

Arrests and ongoing investigations

Three individuals were arrested in relation to the threat, although details remain undisclosed. Sri Lankan authorities, in collaboration with intelligence agencies, continue to investigate the situation to ensure public safety and prevent any potential spillover from international tensions.

Background and regional reactions

The warnings and heightened security in Arugam Bay come at a time of significant international tension, especially as the conflict between Israel and Hamas continues in Gaza. With the conflict in Gaza as a backdrop, some anti-Israel demonstrations have been reported across various regions in Sri Lanka, and public sentiment has shown strong support for Palestine.

Despite this, the island remains a favoured destination for Israeli tourists, who continue to visit in large numbers, particularly in scenic coastal regions like Arugam Bay, where they enjoy the region’s natural beauty and recreational opportunities.

Sri Lanka’s strong public solidarity with Palestine adds another layer to the security response, reflecting the complex regional stance the country navigates while balancing tourism with diplomatic considerations.

Meanwhile, the Government remains committed to ensuring that all visitors, regardless of nationality, are safe and that they feel secure during their stay.

Continued precautions and future outlook

Sri Lankan authorities have advised Israeli nationals currently in the country to relocate to secure areas with a stronger security presence, such as Colombo. The coordinated response from Sri Lankan authorities, the US, and Israel underscores the importance of vigilance and safety measures to protect citizens and visitors alike.

The recent events emphasise the challenges Sri Lanka faces in balancing tourism safety with regional solidarity. The country’s commitment to addressing emerging security threats reflects its broader responsibility to maintain a safe environment amid complex global tensions.
