A Gazette notification has been issued stipulating the maximum wholesale and retail prices for both local and imported rice.

According to the gazette notification issued by the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA), the maximum wholesale price for one kilogramme (kg) of local White and local Red Raw rice is Rs. 215, with a maximum retail price (MRP) of Rs. 220. The gazette also states that the wholesale price of one kg of local Nadu rice is Rs. 225, while its MRP is Rs. 230. Furthermore, the wholesale price of a kg of Keeri Samba is Rs. 255 and the MRP is Rs. 260.

In addition, the CAA has issued a gazette notification setting MRPs for imported rice. Accordingly, the MRP for one kg of imported Raw rice is Rs. 210, while the MRP for one kg of imported Nadu rice is Rs. 220. The Gazette notification also states that the MRP for one kg of imported Samba rice is Rs. 230.

Meanwhile, the CAA said that raids will be carried out from yesterday (10) to identify the traders selling rice at prices higher than the maximum retail and wholesale prices recently set by the Government. CAA Chairperson Hemantha Samarakoon stated that the decision was taken in accordance with the Gazette notification issued on Monday (9), which specifies the new maximum retail and wholesale prices for rice. He emphasised that legal action will be taken against anyone found violating these new price regulations. He also urged traders, producers, wholesalers, and consumers to adhere to the announced rice prices. “If there is any irregularity or sale of rice at an excessive price, you can complain about it to the CAA via the hotline 1977. You can also complain to the CAA’s district offices and the head office,” he said.
