The Matara District Secretariat Y.Wickramasiri stated the removal of a section of the salinity barrier across the Nilwala river will commence today (20).
Accordingly, it will be done under the guidance of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA), Department of Irrigation and National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) and under the coordination of the Matara District Secretariat.
The salinity barrier built on the Nilwala River is the main reason that the flood waters in the Matara district did not subside for several days.
