Lotus Tower bungee jump delayed

  • Reopening pushed back to Jan. 2025

Due to structural drawing issues with the sky ramp, the reopening of Lotus Tower Bungee Jumping, originally scheduled for May 2024 by Go Bungy, has been delayed, The Daily Morning Business learns.

Speaking to The Daily Morning Business, Colombo Lotus Tower Management Company (Pvt) Ltd. Chief Executive Officer Major General (Retd) Prasad Samarasinghe said: “The engineers have submitted the structural drawings to China. However, they wanted to do certain alterations in the structural drawing due to the weight it carries.”

“Currently, they have amended and sent the drawing in the final stages of the planning process,” Samarasinghe said.

He stressed that they are scrutinising the construction carefully, as the structure of the Lotus Tower is not cautious and rational for bungee jumping.

“Therefore, the Singaporean company, engineers from Japan, and our engineers together have decided on a structural alteration.”

Additionally, by the end of September, the construction of the ramp’s structural drawings will be finalised, and the company will begin calling for quotations from both local and international construction companies.

Moreover, “they are planning to start the construction of the ramp next month and reopen bungee jumping to the public by January 2025, since the movement of raw materials up and down the 243-metre tower will take time,” Samarasinghe said.

The lotus tower has also commenced a few other adventure sports such as base jumping, and another adventure sport that will begin by next month.

He stated that they have started base jumping with two companies. One is from Singapore, and the other one is from Japan, along with 35 jumpers.

However, they see no interest from Sri Lanka for these adventure sports, mainly because it is a very risky and dangerous sport in the world.

Samarasinghe added that the ramp construction is an investment made by Go Bungy.

According to the Lotus Tower management, they anticipate that bungee jumping will run in a profit-sharing model that will be in dollars, as Go Bungy is a bungee jumping specialist in countries such as Canada, China, and Japan.

Therefore, once the ramp is constructed they will bring in their clientele to Sri Lanka and the revenue will be shared as follows; the Lotus Tower will get 20% for each jump and Go Bungy will be getting 80% as they are the investors of this particular project, Samarasinghe expressed.

Go Bungy is a Singapore-based company. In 2022, The Colombo Lotus Tower and the Singapore-based Go Bungy signed a contract to start bungee jumping from the 350-metre-high Colombo Lotus Tower from 1 January 2023.
