- Security measures underway
There are currently no plans to impose a curfew on election day, according to Public Security Ministry Secretary Viyani Gunathilaka.
Speaking to The Sunday Morning, Gunathilaka said: “There are no preparations being made for a curfew on 21 September. The decision to impose a curfew lies solely with the President and at this time there is no plan to impose one for the Presidential Election.”
Providing an update on the security measures in place for the election period, Gunathilaka said that a special committee tasked with ensuring the safety of former presidents and presidential candidates was actively performing its duties.
This committee is focused on identifying potential risks, monitoring meetings, and ensuring the overall security of key individuals involved in the election.
Meanwhile, Police Media Spokesman DIG Nihal Thalduwa noted that security arrangements for the election were still being finalised.
“We are in the process of finalising security details and discussing the allocation of duties. Once everything is confirmed, we will hold a press briefing to outline the deployment of security personnel, including details about Army involvement and other relevant information,” Thalduwa said.
Regarding the potential imposition of a curfew, Thalduwa emphasised that such a decision would rest with the President.
“As for the curfew, we cannot comment on that. It is a decision that will be made by the President,” he added.
