Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage has said that plans are in place to change the name of the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium in Diyagama in Homagama. The Minister had made this statement recently after inspecting the stadium, which is in a dilapidated state.
Gamage had further noted that the name of the stadium would be changed once an investor was identified to take over the renovation and management of the venue since it would be difficult to find an investor with the current name of the stadium.
The Sports Ministry is to also initiate an investigation into the goings-on at the stadium until now. According to Gamage, the stadium had been managed under the Mahinda Rajapaksa Foundation that had been operated by the likes of Member of Parliament (MP) Namal Rajapaksa.
However, the Sports Minister had noted that the stadium would be revamped and revived as soon as an investor was identified for the project.
