The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) led National People’s Power (NPP) has filed a fundamental rights (FR) petition before the Supreme Court (SC) challenging the postponement of the Local Government (LG) election.
The petition was lodged by NPP Opposition Parliamentarian Prof. Harini Amarasuriya, former MP Sunil Handunnetti and JVP and NPP member Nihal Abeysinghe.
The petitioners allege that deferring the LG polls, which was initially scheduled to be held on 9 March, has violated the fundamental rights of the people.
A total of 35 State officials including the Finance Ministry Secretary, the Attorney General, the Government Printer, the Inspector General of Police, the Chairman and members of the Election Commission, Prime Minister and Minister of Local Governments Dinesh Gunawardena and members of the Cabinet of Ministers have been named as respondents.
