The Irrigation Department has issued ‘amber’ flood warnings for the low lying areas of the Attanagalu Oya River Basin and the Kuda Ganga Sub Basin of the Kalu River, effective until 9 p.m. today (22).
It stated that considerable rainfall has occurred in the upstream catchment areas of the Kuda Ganga sub basin of the Kalu River as of 9 p.m. on Monday (20). There is a possibility of a minor flood situation occurring in the low lying areas of the Kuda Ganga and Maguru Ganga valleys situated in the Bulathsinhala, Madurawala and Palinda Nuwara Divisional Secretariat (DS) divisions. As a result, there is a high possibility of the inundation of roads, and the flood waters in turn running through the flood plains of the Kuda Ganga and the Magura Ganga, the Department warned.
Meanwhile, considerable rainfall has occurred in most of the catchment areas of the Attanagalu Oya River basin as well. There is a possibility of a flood situation occurring in some of the low lying areas of the Attanagalu Oya and the Uruwal Oya valleys situated in the Divulapitiya, Mirigama, Attanagalla, Mahara, Gampaha, Minuwangoda, Ja-Ela, Katana and Wattala DS Divisions within the next 48 hours, it said. Owing to this situation, there is a possibility of the flooding of some of the roads running through these low lying areas at some places.
People living in these low lying areas and motorists traveling through are requested to pay high attention in this regard while the Disaster Management authorities are requested to take adequate precautions.
