Ministry of Health Secretary Dr. Palitha Mahipala stated that steps have been taken to expand the network of State pharmacies across the country as part of the Government's plan to provide the public with high-quality medicines at affordable prices.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the State Pharmaceuticals Corporation (SPC) branch in Pottuvil, Eastern Province, yesterday (14), Dr. Mahipala noted that this branch is the 62nd in the SPC's growing network of pharmacies. He emphasised the Government's commitment to expanding access to essential medicines through this initiative, ensuring that people across the island benefit from affordable healthcare options.
He also outlined plans to enhance healthcare services in the Ampara District, particularly in Pottuvil. He stated that the Pottuvil Base Hospital is set to be transferred to Central Government management. He noted that this move, supported by the Eastern Provincial Council, aims to further improve the quality of healthcare services available to residents of the region.
As part of this effort, two new buildings at the Hospital are nearing completion. Dr. Mahipala revealed that these facilities will be handed over to the public within the next two months. One of the buildings will house an outpatient department, an emergency treatment unit, and an operating theatre, while the other will be dedicated to administrative functions and outpatient clinics.
He pointed out that these developments are expected to significantly improve healthcare infrastructure in the Eastern Province, thereby enhancing the overall quality of medical services provided to the local population.
