The Catholic Bishops Conference of Sri Lanka (CBCSL) stated that the investigations into the bombings on Easter Sunday of 21 April 2019, are now progressing in a positive manner, with hopes that the remaining work will be completed soon.

Under the administrations of former Presidents Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Ranil Wickremesinghe, there were allegations that the relevant authorities were not conducting proper investigations into the bombings.

Speaking to The Daily Morning yesterday (26), CBCSL Spokesperson Father Jude Chrishantha Fernando said that they currently observe some positivity with regard to the related investigations carried out by institutions such as the Criminal Investigations Department (CID). "The CID is now focusing on certain aspects that they overlooked during the Rajapaksa and Wickremesinghe administrations. For example, they are currently summoning individuals implicated in Channel 4’s revelations about the bombings and recording statements. This is what we had hoped for, and we also hope that these efforts will continue with the same level of commitment."

He also said that they do not expect the current administration to merely compile reports, adding that there should be appropriate action against all individuals who are linked to the orchestration of the bombings. "What Wickremesinghe did was appoint committees and call for reports. There is no point in compiling reports. There should be action based on their findings. Today, we see a progressive trend. However, the Government should still do everything in a transparent manner. Instead of secretly carrying out investigations and informing us, they should inform the public of their outcomes."

On 21 April 2019, Easter Sunday, three Churches (the St. Sebastian’s Church in Katuwapitiya, the St. Anthony’s Church in Kochchikade, and the Zion Church in Batticaloa) and three luxury Hotels in Colombo (Cinnamon Grand Colombo, The Kingsbury, and Shangri-La Colombo) were targeted in a series of coordinated suicide bombings. Later that day, another two bomb explosions took place at a house in Dematagoda and the Tropical Inn Lodge in Dehiwala. More than 270 people excluding the bombers were killed in the bombings, including about 45 foreign nationals, while at least 500 were injured.
