The Special Investigation Unit for Preventing Sports Related Offences of the Sri Lanka Police affiliated with the Ministry of Youth and Sports has reportedly launched a probe into complaints of match-fixing at the ongoing Legends T20 Tournament, informed sources reveal.
According to sources, former Sri Lanka skipper and current Chairman of the Selection Committee Upul Tharanga and former New Zealand player Neil Broom had allegedly received offers to throw certain games of the tournament.
It is said that both Tharanga and Broom had lodged complaints with the Special Investigation Unit and the duo had also notified the International Cricket Council (ICC) Anti-Corruption Unit as well.
Meanwhile, it has come to light that the former Sri Lanka opener and the ex-Kiwi star had been approached to fix certain matches by Indians Yoni Patel and Pachalodiya Akash, respectively, who are both functioning as manager and assistant of one of the teams featured in the Legends T20 Tournament played at Pallekele.
Both Patel and Akash have also been prevented from leaving the country via a travel injunction imposed on them by the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court in connection with this incident.
It is also reliably learnt that the Special Investigation Unit has expanded its ongoing inquiry to determine whether any further offers to fix matches have been made to players of the Legends T20 Tournament.
