The Ministry of Trade, Commerce and Food Security has denied allegations made by the trade unions of the Cooperative Wholesale Establishment (CWE) that subject Minister Nalin Fernando is planning to close down the CWE.
Speaking to The Daily Morning yesterday (15), a Ministry source stated that the Ministry has no such plans and that no discussion has been held in this regard. She also said that the Ministry denied the false allegations made by the trade unions affiliated with the CWE. “We have never discussed this matter previously, neither with the Minister nor with any other party. So, we don’t know where they received this information from and it seems that they have received false information in this regard,” she said.
The CWE United Trade Union Alliance dashed coconuts on Tuesday (13) in Modara in protest against the alleged attempt by Fernando to close the CWE.
Several attempts made by The Daily Morning to contact Fernando and CWE Chairman Pasanda Yapa Abeywardana proved futile.
