CEB assessing data for next tariff revision

The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) is currently assessing the relevant data for the next electricity tariff revision, stated the Ministry of Power and Energy.

The Electricity Consumers' Association (ECA) recently stated that according to the Government's decision to revise electricity tariffs quarterly, the tariffs were due for revision in November, but that no steps have been taken thus far to process it.

When queried by The Daily Morning as to whether there will be a tariff revision in November, Secretary to the Ministry Dr. Sulakshana Jayawardena said: “In fact, the tariff revision needs to be done in October. The CEB is currently doing the relevant calculations and data assessments. But, a proposal has not been submitted to the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) yet.”

The electricity tariffs were last reduced in July of this year. Under that revision, the PUCSL approved an overall reduction of electricity tariffs by 22.5%.

Multiple attempts to contact CEB Chairperson Nalinda Illangakoon and General Manager Dr. Narendra de Silva proved futile.

ECA General Secretary Sanjeewa Dhammika recently charged that the Government is reluctant to implement its own decision to revise electricity tariffs four times a year.

“The Government, which claims that only President and independent Presidential candidate Ranil Wickremesinghe can build the country, doesn't even bother to implement what was decided by the Cabinet of Ministers which is to revise electricity tariffs on a quarterly basis. According to that decision, a tariff revision is due in November, but there are no arrangements as of now,” he said.
