Philippe Lazzarini, the Commissioner General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), expressed gratitude to President Ranil Wickremesinghe and the Government of Sri Lanka (GoSL) for its substantial financial support towards addressing the urgent crisis in the Gaza Strip.
In his letter, Lazzarini highlighted the dire situation faced by over two million Palestinians in Gaza, the majority of whom are Palestine Refugees under UNRWA's mandate.
The Commissioner General emphasised the critical role of UNRWA's dedicated staff in providing essential aid amidst challenging conditions, while stressing the importance of upholding international humanitarian law and safeguarding civilian lives and infrastructure.
The financial contribution from Sri Lanka to the UNRWA Flash Appeal is expected to significantly bolster humanitarian efforts in Gaza, benefiting over a million individuals currently seeking refuge in UNRWA facilities.
Lazzarini also noted the cumulative impact of years of underfunding on UNRWA's operations, hindering its ability to effectively deliver crucial services.
Expressing appreciation for Sri Lanka's unwavering commitment to supporting Palestine Refugees and UNRWA, Lazzarini conveyed optimism in the continued partnership and support from GoSL.
