Inmates held under Section 54 at the Matara Prison were transferred to Angunakolapelessa Prison today (2). 

This transfer took place following a fatal accident, in which the falling of a Bo tree branch resulted in the death of one inmate, while injuring 11 others. 

Matara Prison Superintendent Mangala Weliwita explained that the transfer was due to limited space and to manage the aftermath. 

Accordingly, increased security measures, with external support from police and Special Task Force (STF), were implemented, while the relevant authorities investigate and assess the damage to ensure prisoner safety.
