‘No’ dual citizen MPs per Immigration-Emigration Dept.

  • Alles claims that there may be MPs with undeclared foreign citizenship posing with SL passports

The Ministry of Public Security stated that while there are no Parliamentarians holding dual citizenship as per the information available to the Department of Immigration and Emigration, there could, however, be MPs who have acquired the citizenship of another country while continuing to pose as Sri Lankan citizens.

The Department of Immigration and Emigration comes under the purview of the Ministry of Public Security.

It was recently claimed by the People's Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) that the Department is ignoring a request that they (PAFFREL) had made under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, No. 12 of 2016, seeking information pertaining to MPs holding dual citizenship.

When queried by The Daily Morning regarding the matter, the Minister of Public Security Tiran Alles said that the Department would definitely reveal information if there are any dual citizen MPs. "If someone has applied for or obtained dual citizenship, the Department would know it. It (Department) will also provide that information to anyone who asks for such,"

However, he said that the issue is that there are no MPs who have applied for or who hold dual citizenship as per the available data. "How can they provide information when there are no such MPs?" Even though there are no MPs holding dual citizenship, Alles said that there could be MPs who have obtained citizenship of other countries, but continue to pose as Sri Lankans by using Sri Lankan passports. "There can be MPs who have obtained the citizenship of other countries, but when they haven't declared it and continue to be Sri Lankan citizens with Sri Lankan passports, there is no way for the Department to know about it."

A representative of the PAFFREL, speaking to The Daily Morning, said recently that they initially submitted a list of MPs' names to the Department, seeking clarification on their citizenship status. However, the Department had refused to provide such information, citing privacy related concerns. He said that the Department had then requested for some other information in order to provide the relevant information, after which they (the PAFFREL) had provided such. Despite them furnishing that information requested, he said that the Department is yet to respond to their request.
