Alleged threats to MP Ponnambalam: Police report to be submitted to courts today

The Police department is to submit a report into the alleged death threats directed at Tamil National People's Front (TNPF) Chairman and Member of Parliament Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam last Friday (02), to the courts today, The Daily Morning learns.

The report into the incident was called by the Ministry of Public Security regarding the allegations made by Parliament Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam. A video of the MP having a verbal argument with a group of persons, including Police officers in Jaffna has been shared on social media.

Reports indicate that MP Ponnambalam, who was attending a public meeting in Mardhan Karni, Vadamarachchi East in Jaffna, got into a verbal argument with a group of persons and a Police officer. Ponnambalam told the press on Saturday (3) that a police officer had pointed a pistol at him and threatened him at gunpoint. The MP has told The Sunday Morning that he feared for his life and did not want to go to a police station to lodge a complaint, adding that he has reported the incident to the Human Rights Commission branch in Jaffna (HRCSL). When asked if the MP had informed the Speaker about the incident, Ponnambalam said that he will do so when the parliamentary session begins today.

Responding to a question by The Daily Morning, a senior official of the Public Security Ministry stated that Minister of Public Security Tiran Alles, had instructed the Police to provide a report regarding the incident. He also said that the Police would report the facts to the court today (5) regarding the related incident.

Speaker of Parliament Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena was not available for comment.
