Thurstan College OBU Runner-Up at UAE Sri Lions Back to School 7s

In a spectacular display of skill and determination, the Thurstan College OBU wing in the UAE showcased their rugby prowess by claiming the Runner-Up position in the Sri Lions Back to School Rugby 7s Tournament recently. 

The final, held between Thurstan College and St. Anthony’s College, was a closely-contested battle that kept spectators on the edge of their seats

The Thurstanites, led by the talented Kalinga Perera, emerged as favourites in the tournament, arriving at the cup finals as an unbeaten team. Despite their impressive journey, the final game eluded them as the match concluded with a score of 21-0 points in favour of St. Anthony’s College. 

Nevertheless, the young players – including Kalinga Perera, Tharindu Malikge, Harsha Gunarathne, Chinthaka Lahiru, Mohammed Bilal, Bimsara Perera, Kavishka Wanniarachchi, Hasitha Fernando, Nalin Tharanga, and Nilupul Devinda – showcased their outstanding skills and exemplary sportsmanship throughout the tournament.

The Thurstanites showcased their prowess in the semi-final encounter, defeating Isipathana College with a scoreline of 21-14 points, securing their well-deserved spot in the final showdown. In the quarterfinals, they displayed their dominance by overpowering St. Joseph’s College with an impressive score of 47-0 points.

A key factor in the team’s success was the unwavering support provided by the Thurstan College community in the UAE. Individuals such as Nizardeen, Tuan, Yohan De Alwis, Nalaka, Oshan, Rimaz, Rathnayake, Asker, and others rallied behind the young team, offering crucial support and encouragement throughout the tournament. Their dedication played a significant role in boosting player morale and performance on the field.

This achievement signifies a pivotal moment for both the Thurstan College rugby team and the OBU wing in the UAE. Their exceptional performance has not only brought pride to their alma mater but has also strengthened the bond among the Thurstan College community in the UAE. 

The team’s journey in the Sri Lions Back to School Rugby 7s Tournament will be remembered as a testament to their dedication, skill, and the unwavering support of their community.
